bto Launches Construction Forum Series

On 9 June 2011, Ann O’Connell, a specialist in Construction Law accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, and team Associate Jilly Petrie launched bto’s Construction Forum series with: 'Payment in Construction Contracts'.

The event attracted a range of guests including representatives from the CBI Scotland, banks, construction, engineering and insurance companies, surveyors and RSLs. The date of the first forum was timely given bto’s involvement in preparing and last week trialling the SBCC’s new, affordable, ‘off the shelf’ Homeowner contract, designed to protect homeowners, who are having an extension or other building work carried out, from ‘cowboy’ builders.

Ann sits on the drafting committee of the Scottish Building Contracts Committee and performed the prestigious role of preparing the SBCC 2005 suite of contracts, through the 2009 revision and is currently working on the SBCC 2011 versions. This complements the team’s wide knowledge base on building contracts and consultant appointments.

Ann and Jilly have both contentious and non-contentious construction skills and considerable experience in dealing with claims relating to construction and engineering. Their expertise is invaluable to insurers, contractors and consultants. On the non-contentious side, they perform a valuable role for bto’s housebuilding/developer clients and enhance the offering of bto’s growing renewables team.

Ann said: “I am delighted with the launch of bto’s Construction forums. These events provide our clients with the opportunity to meet like minded people and discuss matters of mutual interest. Our clients welcome this added value service.”
