Support in connection with Compulsory Purchase Orders

Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) are intended to be used only after negotiation for the acquisition of land has been unsuccessful.  They can only be used if an appropriate and explicit statutory power exists for compulsory purchase.

bto advises on the use of such powers and can advise organisations that hold compulsory purchase powers and land owners who are approached and asked to sell, subject to the threat of CPO if negotiations fail.

It may also be the case that a client’s project, supported by a statutory authority, requires land.  We can work with that authority, which may use its compulsory purchase powers to assist if more conventional acquisition negotiations are unsuccessful.

Whether threatened with a CPO, or looking to acquire land with the use of CPO as last resort, our clients can benefit not only from our understanding of the law in this area, but also our Property team’s extensive experience.
