BTO's 10th year at The Fringe focuses on first time entertainment and publishing contracts

08 August 2018

Tenth consecutive free BTO Fringe event aims to protect artists and authors.

Leading independent Scottish law firm BTO Solicitors LLP is set to take the stage again at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, to help budding recording artists and authors navigate the contractual minefield.

Part of the Fringe Central Events programme for Fringe participants, Entertainment and Publishing Contracts: A Guide for the Wannabe will see BTO’s hands-on entertainment industry and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) advisers share their experience and top tips.

Commenting on the importance of the subject, partner and intellectual property expert at BTO, Paul Motion, said: “The first offer of a deal can understandably be a hugely exciting occasion for the aspiring artist or author, however, it is vital to keep your feet on the ground and consider the terms of the proposed arrangement carefully: this is your future. Historically, entertainment and publishing contracts have tended to be heavily weighted in favour of managers, producers and publishers. We will try to flag the most common pitfalls.

“As strong supporters of the wider arts community, we want to help performers and writers secure the fairest possible contracts. As the largest arts festival in the world, the Fringe attracts thousands of participants from across the UK and beyond, many of whom are beginners on the scene. Our dedicated sessions will look at what terms contracts should contain and what performers and authors should try to negotiate out before signing a new deal – guidance which we hope will serve them well throughout their careers.”

The free show will take place in Lecture Theatre 1 at Fringe Central (Venue 2), located at Appleton Tower on the corner of Crichton Street and Chapel Street. The dates are: Thursday 9 August (11:30 – 12:30) and Thursday 16 August (16:00 – 17:00).

Tickets for Entertainment and Publishing Contracts: A Guide for the Wannabe are free and can be obtained at the door of Fringe Central or online at:
