Stephen defends medical and dental negligence actions in local Sheriff Courts, the All-Scotland Sheriff Personal Injury Court at Edinburgh and in the Court of Session, some of which involve complex injuries and fatalities. Stephen has represented Hospital Doctors, General Practitioners, Aesthetic and Cosmetic practitioners, Dentists and Care Home professionals. He recently defended a medical professional in a fatal sepsis case for losses allegedly arising out of Montgomery consent issues. He manages a number of pelvic mesh cases. Stephen also defends historic abuse actions for professionals and institutions.
Stephen assists professionals in complaints to the General Medical Council, General Dental Council and Health and Care Professions Council. He also has experience of defending discipline complaints from the Law Society of Scotland. In 2018, he successfully challenged a regulatory notice from Healthcare Improvement Scotland.
Stephen appears regularly before the Sheriff Courts and Court of Session. He has conducted Proofs, appeals and various contentious hearings before Sheriff Courts across Scotland. Since qualifying as a Solicitor Advocate in 2016, he has appeared before the Court of Session in By Order and opposed motion hearings. Stephen also appears before regulatory Tribunals. In 2019, he appeared in defence of a doctor before an Interim Orders Tribunal Hearing.
Since around 2014, Stephen has volunteered for a Scottish schools mooting charity, the School Mock Court Case Project. In August 2018, he was appointed Director of Writings for the charity. He is also a Notary Public.
